I really mean that. I love cold air, snow, and sitting by the woodstove. I love to ski and skate and I even get to coach ski jumping in the winter. I especially like driving in the snow, as I may have mentioned before. But THIS. No thank you. To quote my 3-year-old, “PLEASE NO THANK YOU.”

All the car pictures are AFTER I’d cleaned it off once, driven into town, and spent 5 minutes clearing ice off it a second time, only to break my veteran snowbrush in the process.

Seriously, F this noise. Bring me snow. Lots of snow. Or nothing at all.

On the plus side, my kids’ school was delayed this morning, then cancelled shortly thereafter. My work was the same way. So we went to the diner and I ate approximately 1,000,000 calories and won’t be hungry for dinner - no, really. The last time I ate a Diner Breakfast at 10:00am, I barely ate until the next day. I loooove corned beef hash.

What were we talking about?

We are experiencing what I like to call an “Ohio winter”. It’s cold, but not cold enough for snow to stick around. Mostly ice and slush. No thanks, I prefer 12" of snow to that noise.

With my Miata on slushy days that then followed up with ice, I have been unable to open the doors and been stuck outside of the car. It has taken upwards of 20-30 minutes just to get the car open. With buckets of warm water, a gallon of washer fluid, and using a pry bar to eventually free the doors. That sort of weather is no joke! Regular cold and snow is pleasant and a fun time. I love going top down in sub 20 degree weather and feeling the cold air. I do miss that part of winter now being in Socal where “very cold” is 45 degrees. But I dont miss the daily (sometimes twice if it winters at work) ritual of ice scraping one bit!

hahaha basically. I don’t panic but I don’t like it.

Whenever I can’t get the driver’s door open, I go over to the opposite rear door and work on that - or just your passenger door, in your case. That way I don’t break my driver’s door. Then once I’m in, I’ll push from the inside, rather than trying to use the door handle for all my leverage.

I had to do this with ALL THREE of our cars just about a week ago.

I hate snow. I actually don’t mind ice. Ice is a pain, but at least it doesn’t hang around as long.

Ice slush that crap is heavy and very tiring. I ruined 2 ice scrapers clearing the wheel wells of our car last week.

Big diner breakfast is great! Today sounds like a good day with the kids too.

Well yeah I definitely just used the passenger door. Miatas are particularly susceptible since the rain rail is designed to allow water to flow through the roof/door area anyways. So the water goes in slowly and freezes, and really plugs up the whole thing. It helps to have two extra doors to try lol. At least I had proper winter gear, some neighbors really looked miserable doing similar work with no gloves, a nonwaterproof coat, and dress pants+shoes on. Any time I had to do major snow excavation, I put on my heavy snow boots plus ski pants, jacket, and gloves on. Goggles and facemask too if it were still actively coming down. Then I would just drive away dressed like that with the top down, giggling the whole time as the car refuses to stay straight with throttle input.

With you 100%.

That said, as long as you have warning, freezing rain>rain because it doesn’t melt the snow.

I was so confused this morning because yesterday was 55 degrees with a bit of rain here, then I wake up today to a dusting of snow and a bit of ice. WTF?!

Alternative. Works with camping propane tanks. I use it to kill weeds and start fires. They advertise them for clearing ice too. Just be careful and don’t set the Miata on fire.

Well its a moot point nowadays, the Miata is not seeing snow or any wet stuff ever again, outside of a car wash. It doesnt even rain in LA. And when it does, I would much rather just drive the STi anyways. I havent even put up the top in weeks and the last time I did was just because I parked it somewhere outside at night for an extended period. Will eventually see some snow in the Subaru but west coast weather seems to be more friendly for fluffy easy snow.

Yeah, the power has been blinking today, too - another lovely side effect of freezing rain.

Luckily, we have a gas stove to cook, a woodstove for heat, and can run our fridge on my boat batteries off an inverter.

You can see in the picture of my (former) scraper, I’ve got micro-spikes. The spikes are about 1/2" long but they’re pretty fantastic. I use them to walk down the landing hill of a ski jump, which is quite steep. I’ve also been wearing them in my driveway, lol.

Well, the forecast here says the ice will be around for a bit. The temps are dropping for the next day or so, then staying cold at least until the weekend - which isn’t too bad actually. We had ice on the trees from around Christmas, that stayed around for WEEKS because it stayed so cold.

When I lived in SoCal I thought it amusing when the frost warning sounded on the trip computer on the 525i because the temp got down to 39 degrees. Now that I live in the Midwest, any day that’s above 40 is a day not to bother with a jacket...

Crazy how that works right? I was skiing in Utah a couple weekends ago and it hit like 38 degrees one day around lunch time. I thought I was going to sweat to death because it was so hot out. I was sitting there with my coat off while eating lunch. Meanwhile it was like 50 degrees the other night here at home in LA and I had to go find a sweater because I was a little chilly.

In the mountains though on the way to work I have seen as low as 32 in the Subaru since it has a temp gauge. Miata temp gauge of feeling the air on my face told me it was also pretty cold a few other days. And up in ridgecrest it was ~24 degrees when I went there, that being only about 2 hours from home. Elevation does crazy things!

Haha yeah for sure. If you ever get the itching to go drive the PCH through Big Sur (I know it was on my bucketlist before I got here), then I’d be happy to join. I am still impatiently waiting for the damn thing to get rebuilt after a huge section got taken out last March, been pissing me off to not have an inaugural miata drive of sorts up that way to start my living here.

You need a Wheel Cleaning Stick 3000! I know you were cleaning wheel wells, but guess what, this fine invention works for that too!

I got so sick of trying to clean out my wheels after playing in the snow, because they’d be unbalanced once the snow melted and re-froze inside the wheels, I finally took the time to make up just the exact size and shape stick out of oak to fit just between my calipers and the wheel, and I keep it in the trunk at all times now. It’s about 3/4" wide by 1/4" thick and 16" long. Oak is good because it’s strong. I went through a few pine Wheel Cleaning Sticks (version 1000 and 2000) before settling on white oak for the latest model.

Our Volvo has too little clearance between the caliper and wheel, so I also keep an old piece of flexible plastic cutting board in the car.
